I had an idea, and I need the input of Mountainboard.net readers.
Machete Mountainboarding, or maybe Bushwack Mountainboarding-the name isn’t important rightnow-but it’s a new style of riding, sortof. Technically it would fall under freeride and downhill, but it’s got a bit of a twist: no trails allowed, it’s all about PURE OFF-ROAD riding.
The only trails you can use are those that get you to the top of the hill or mountain. From there, it’s time to crash through brush, dodge unseen logs, and battle the tangling grasses. Many of us have already done this at one time or another, but how often do we actually persue it. I think it could be interesting.
Let me know what you think, and if you have any awesome names for the style. I’d be willing to test it out this season if anyone would be interested. I would post my findings as it develops.
Let me know what you all think.

So where is the difference between freeride and “pure” off-road? If you use any kind of trail it is downhill and if not, you call it freeride.

Hmmm… Good point. I guess my vision was more in the sense of riding terrain normally avoided, where there’s a lot of brush or the grass is so tall you can’t see your board. What do you think, it’s still pretty much freeride isn’t it.

I’ll have to pack the large puncture repair kit and extra tubes then.

Ummmm I’d recommend checking the tall grass for rocks, stumps, or anything else that could bring your session to a hault. Theoretically it sounds like a good idea but you know as well as I do trucks and stumps dont mix. I used to love doing it on a snowboard in the spring time though. Nothing like cornsnow and bushgrinding.

I kindof like the unknown- you know, the suprise factor involved in not knowing what is under the grass.

as far as i know, it’s awesome. theres no drop point or trail, and its as free as freeriding can get. i want to say i like it more than trails, but its the same difference between pow and groomers- a way harder workout. it can show you a lot more about you’re own riding too, and how to improve it. give it a shot, and find something steep to try it with. it can be fun.

I live in the woods of Idaho, i love to free ride, AKA rough ride….
The unknown factor is definitely what keeps me coming back for more, and ultimately makes or breaks the season for me. It has gone both ways.
Guess that’s what separates the men from the boys….
